A Minton majolica large ewer and stand, dated
1871, from a design by Hughes Protat, the
campaniform ewer with a blue-speckled
brown body surmounted on the ochre and
green gadrooned blue shoulder by a putto
astride a blue dolphin beneath the spout and
a merchild supporting the blue and brown
double-snake handle on the reverse, the
blue lower body molded with four (4) green
snake-edged grotesque masks above a
waisted circular foot (chips around the ankle)
encircled with a snake-entwined reclining
Cupid and companion, and the stand with a
green and ochre-edged blue raised center
(small chip) encircled by four molded
merchildren alternating with four ochre-
edged oval recesses decorated with an
ochre-streaked green glaze repeated on the
underside and on the interior of the ewer's
spout, the stand rim with a green snake-
entwined ochre edge, both impressed
Minton, the date cipher for 1871, shape
number 787 and letter U
